Shelby Gray

I have been a vegetarian for over 3 years. To be more precise, I am a lacto-ovo pescatarian. It is prima facie wrong to kill an animal for unnecessary consumption, when with minimal effort I can abstain from contributing to said killing and maintain health. It is sometimes morally permissable to kill fish because longevity studies have shown that those who occasionally eat fish product live longer, and I place greater moral value on my life life as a whole than the sum of the lives of the fish I eat.

Eating meat is wrong because killing is usually wrong, when the subject is being deprived of future experiences, activities, projects, etc. I learned this from your assignment to read Don Marquis.

I begrudgingly accepted all those premises, not because I don't wish to eat meat, but rather because I find the premises valid and the argument sound.

I began reading this essay with high hopes that finally something had broken the Marquis - Gray - Vegetarian argument, because I very much miss steaks and pork chop. But I just cannot bring myself to read past entry 9. It was simply too ridiculous.

It was, however, most entertaining.
