I had a terrific bike ride this afternoon with my friends Phil and Scott. It rained in the morning (while I was teaching), but had cleared by the time we began riding at 3:45. We did the 30.6-mile trail route. Although I didn't feel well (largely because I ate too late), I shattered my speed record of 17.63 miles per hour. I broke the 18-mile-per-hour mark with 18.03. (Elapsed time = 1:41:47.) I worked hard near the end to keep 18 miles per hour. My heart rate reached 163, which is only one beat below my maximum. (Does that mean I was near death?) The best part is that I burned 1,800 calories. We saw three bobcats on the trail. Scott, who is new to the trail, thought they were dogs.
